Las Peñitas: Surf, Sun, and Nature in León

Just a few kilometers from León’s colonial heat and historic streets sits one of Nicaragua’s most lively, well-loved coasts: Playa Las Peñitas.
If you want consistent surf, Pacific sunsets, wild nature, and well-known beach parties, Las Peñitas is a strong fit. This guide covers what you need to make the visit count.
How to get to Las Peñitas from León
About 18 to 20 kilometers west of the university city, getting to Las Peñitas is simple, quick, and cheap:
- Local bus (the cheapest option): Go to the Mercadito de Sutiaba in León. Route buses leave every 45 minutes (from 5:40 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The ride takes around 40 minutes and the fare is only 18 córdobas (about $0.50 USD), dropping you a few steps from the sea.
- Taxi or private transport: You can take a direct taxi from anywhere in León. The average fare is around 500 córdobas (about $13–$14 USD). Agree on the price with the driver before you get in.
- Your own vehicle: The road is fully paved and in good shape. Follow the exit toward Poneloya and take the clearly marked left turn toward Las Peñitas.
What makes Las Peñitas special? The legend of “La Peña del Tigre”
Unlike more packed beaches, Las Peñitas still keeps the feel of its original fishing community, mixed with a traveler-driven, low-key scene.
The area’s geographic icon is La Peña del Tigre, a huge black rock where Pacific waves break hard. A popular colonial-era legend says a couple of lovers fled to this rock and were eaten by a tiger. Today, with no big cats around, the rock is the favorite lookout for Nicaragua’s sunsets.
What to do in Las Peñitas: surf, mangroves, and turtles
Entertainment on this dark volcanic sand beach goes beyond sitting in the sun with a cold drink:
Surf year-round
Las Peñitas is a notable sand-bottom beach break with consistent swell. The waves work for intermediate surfers and for beginners taking lessons at local surf schools that rent boards and offer private classes.
Isla Juan Venado Nature Reserve
Right off the coast, this reserve has a 22-kilometer mangrove corridor. You can rent kayaks or hire a local boat to explore the ecosystem, home to iguanas, crocodiles, and a wide range of water birds.
Sea turtle releases
Isla Juan Venado is a key nesting site for the paslama (olive ridley) turtle. Between September and December, community-run hatcheries and MARENA organize hatchling releases at sunset, a moving and educational experience.
Epic parties and coastal nightlife
When the sun drops, Las Peñitas’ quiet gives way to a lively night scene, especially on weekends and in high season.
Well-known spots like Bigfoot Hostel (famous for themed parties and an international crowd) and Playa Roca bring together tourists and people from León for beach bonfires, DJs, and dancing in the sea breeze.
Where to sleep and eat in Las Peñitas
Tourist infrastructure has grown a lot, with options for different kinds of travelers:
Where to stay:
- Backpacker vibe and parties: Bigfoot Hostel and Mano a Mano Eco Hostal are good for meeting people.
- Quiet and charm: El Belga Loco and Hotel Barca de Oro (the latter with a nice view of the estuary) stand out for a family, relaxed feel.
- Eco adventure: Surfing Turtle Lodge, on the other side of the estuary, offers eco cabins and its own turtle hatchery.
Where to eat seafood:
- Restaurante Bertha: One of the most traditional spots at the start of the beach, a solid pick for whole fried fish, fresh ceviche, and local-style seafood.
- Sua Grill & Chill and Casita de Playa Bomalu: Strong options for fusion cooking and fresh plates in front of the sea.
If you visit León, Las Peñitas is worth the trip. And if you come back into the colonial city hungry in the afternoon, a good plan is to stop at Asados La Brocha for charcoal-grilled meat or a juicy churrasco cooked to order. A solid way to close a day on the Pacific.
