How to get to Cerro Negro Volcano?
This colossus of black ash is located approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the city of León, making it a perfect destination for a half-day excursion or adventure tour.
1. Route from León:
- Leave from León city via the road to San Jacinto.
- After about 10 km, take a signposted detour to Cerro Negro Volcano.
- Continue along a rural dirt and stone road (4x4 recommended in the rainy season).
- The complete trip takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the condition of the road.
2. Don't have your own vehicle?
- Guided tours: Several agencies in León offer daily packages that include transportation, guide, entrance fee, and equipment for volcano boarding.
- Taxi from León: A practical option if you are traveling in a group. Negotiate the price before leaving.
- Public transportation + walk: Take a bus to Malpaisillo or San Jacinto and then arrange local transportation or walk to the entrance (not recommended if you do not know the area well).
