Bigfoot Hostel in León: Volcano Boarding and Adventure

If you’re planning a backpacking trip through Central America and want a mix of extreme adventure and a social hostel, Bigfoot Hostel in León, Nicaragua belongs on the itinerary.

Famous worldwide as the original volcano boarding operator, this hostel is more than a place to sleep: it’s León’s adrenaline hub and a well-known meeting point for international travelers (18+ only).

What makes Bigfoot Hostel unique?

In the center of historic colonial León, Bigfoot Hostel has been building extreme experiences since 2004. The vibe is known for being social and festive, a good fit if you’re traveling solo and want to meet people fast.

The hostel has solid facilities for cooling off after a day out:

  • Outdoor pool: A real oasis in León’s heat.
  • Bar and café: Daily events and themed party nights from Wednesday to Sunday.
  • Common areas and entertainment: Pool tables, hammocks, and a shared kitchen for guests.

They offer lodging for different budgets, from spacious shared dorms with lockers (bring your own padlock) to private rooms if you want more comfort.

Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro: the trip’s big outing

The main reason people stay at Bigfoot is volcano boarding. They pioneered sliding down the slopes of Cerro Negro and have taken more than 30,000 travelers on the run.

What is the experience like?

  1. The climb: You’ll walk about 45 minutes to 1 hour up the ash cone of Cerro Negro. A useful tip: you can hire a local porter for about $3 to $5 USD to carry your board, which supports the local economy and makes the climb lighter.
  2. The descent: After putting on a full protective suit, gloves, and special goggles, you slide sitting on a modified wooden board at speeds from 50 km/h up past 100 km/h.
  3. The package includes: Round-trip transport (often a “party bus” on the way back), full safety gear, board, bilingual guides, and a souvenir T-shirt.

Note: You still pay a national park entrance fee of about $5 to $10 USD in cash.
